Keynote Lecture by Kaspar Gubler, Nodegoat Day 2025, Prague, 12 November 2025

Keynote Lecture (Kaspar Gubler, Bern):

“From RESEDA to ChatGPT, from FileMaker to nodegoat: Lessons from 50 Years of Digital History Research”

Over the past five decades, digital tools have transformed the way historians work. From early AI projects like RESEDA in the 1970s, through FileMaker-based infrastructures, to today’s flexible research environments such as nodegoat and the rise of large language models like ChatGPT. This talk not only traces the successes, failures, and unexpected lessons of half a century of digital history, but also highlights the decisive development steps along the way. It shows how the use of digital tools has opened up new perspectives for historical research in the past, and explores which further insights and research questions may become possible in the future.
